The Church of Ireland primate, Archbishop Robin Eames, is in Iraq making a pre-Christmas pastoral visit to members of the First Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment serving there, writes Patsy McGarry.
During his three-day stay he will meet with chaplains, visit a field hospital, share meals with soldiers of all ranks, and take part in acts of worship.
Responding to an invitation from the regiment to visit the soldiers in Iraq, Archbishop Eames said: "I am delighted to have been invited to visit the regiment as they serve here in Iraq. I feel it is important to offer pastoral support to all those who are serving far from home and families as Christmas approaches."
The 1st Royal Irish Regiment has been in Iraq since its tour of duty there began last July. The regiment includes soldiers from both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
