Guatemala City - At least one person was killed and 27 injured when a powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale rocked Central America yesterday, felling power lines and damaging houses. The tremor was also felt in Honduras, El Salvador and Belize, but no major damage was reported in those countries, officials said.
Puerto Barrios, 295 kilometers (177 miles) north-east of Guatemala City, received the most damage, with one death and several people injured by fallen walls and shattered windows, rescue official Mr Jairo Arrego said. Aftershocks continued to rattle the area.
