EasyJet could abandon its plans to buy Deutsche BA owing to a failure to reach agreement with the German carrier's pilots over wages, said a Deutsche BA spokeswoman.
The low-cost British airline has an option to buy the loss-making German arm of British Airways by August. But easyJet said it would only do so if Deutsche BA's pilots agree to bring their salaries into line with British pilots.
Although many of the German pilots are willing to accept a change in conditions, the powerful Cockpit union has objected, the spokeswoman said.
"Cockpit is in a position to mess everything up," she said.
The union has already cancelled a planned meeting with easyJet.
Deutsche BA said last week it planned to cut capacity in the next two months as a result of low demand and did not rule out cutting jobs.
