Frederic William Burton's Meeting on the Turret Stairs, pictured here, is one of the Irish paintings featured on a set of four posters to whet Transition Year artistic appetites. Other works from the 18th century to the early 20th century include Roderic O'Conor's Farm at Lezaven, John Lavery's Ratification of the Irish Treaty in the English House of Lords and Jack B Yeats'

Many Ferried. The posters are sponsored by Esso Ireland, which celebrates 100 years in Ireland this year. Produced by the National Gallery, they will be distributed by the Department of Education and Science to second-level schools around the country.

Book feast

The Children's Book Festival is running this month in over 70 libraries and 42 bookshops around the country. There should be an event near you. Authors reading from their work include Frank Murphy, Eddie Lenihan and Adrienne Geoghegan at the Belltable Arts Centre in Limerick; Siobhan Parkinson at Cavan County Library and Colman ORaghallaigh and Mary Arrigan at the Baboro Children's Festival in Galway. Rockin' concerts

A German rock band, Pastell, from Wuppertal Community School is currently on tour in Ireland. The rock group of six will play to about 500 students in Mount Temple School, Dublin, tomorrow; at St Kilian's German School, Co Dublin, on Thursday and to about 300 students at Gorey Community School, Co Wexford, on Friday. Their tour, which has also taken them to schools in the UK has been sponsored by the German Institute and the VWSound Foundation. It is hoped that the crowds will flock in from all over to cheer and sing along in German. The group love to welcome any new Irish friends to Wuppertal.

Career show

A career exhibition will be held in Waterford on Wednesday, October 21st, running from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m in the Bridge Hotel. Galway day

NUI Galway is running an open day this Saturday. Students can meet staff and get advice about courses. The day runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be lectures, tours and demonstrations.
