BREAKING THROUGH is a new publication from the Dublin Institute of Adult Education aimed at teachers and tutors of those in the throes of acquiring basic literacy and communications skills.

Various aspects of the communication process are covered and the book is very practical, with emphasis on specific learning outcomes.

Breaking Through is the work of three experienced teachers of adult students, who intend it to be an ideas stimulant for teachers of youth and adult groups who can use it as a foundation on which to build worksheets to suit their particular needs.

"The exercises are adult oriented and the book is geared towards those with little or no formal educational background who are just putting their foot on the first rung of the qualifications ladder," says co-author Maureen Neville, co-ordinator of the Institute's Basic Education Unit.

"We would see the book being used by Youthreach groups and by those preparing adults for the foundation level of the communications course from the National Council for Vocational Awards. This course is modular in structure and people can complete it at their own pace which is significant for early school leavers who may feel intimidated by the idea of having to work to a specific timetable," she says.
