Urban Rural Week, aimed at schoolchildren in urban areas around the State, takes place from next Monday to Friday.

It will involve visits by members of the Agricultural Science Association (ASA) to many schools in urban areas. Information about farming will also be available on the Agri-Aware website (www.agriaware.ie).

ASA president Michael Miley says Urban Rural Day has brought more than 300,000 children on to farms in the last 16 years, but, because of the foot-and-mouth situation, farm visits have not been arranged for this year.

"The new-look Urban Rural Week involves ASA joining forces with the INTO and Agri-Aware in ensuring that key messages about modern farming are delivered to the maximum number of children," Miley said. "We will be bringing the experts to the classroom and the Agri-Aware website will have a special section highlighting the importance of agriculture to the national and rural economy. It will also feature a competition for children and teachers."

The ASA will use the opportunity to thank urban children and their parents for their vigilance and understanding during the foot-and-mouth crisis.

"These children experienced great disruption in sporting and social activities, particularly during the early weeks of the emergency, and it is important that they understand that their support is appreciated," Miley said.
