Bugs: The Movie

LIGHTS, camera, insects..

LIGHTS, camera, insects. . . that about sums up the next special event organised by Science&Culture, the group of scientists, teachers, media analysts and journalists who explore cultural aspects of science at weird and wonderful debates.

This latest event will include a screening of Microcosmos, an extraordinary and highly successful French film whose cast are all insects. The morning kicks off with an 11 a.m. screening at the Screen Cinema in College Street, Dublin, and goes on to a discussion on "nature in close-up" with film-maker Eamon de Buitlear, television producer John Cummins, Professor Martin Downes of St Patrick's College, Maynooth, and Dr Michael Ryan of UCD.

Microcosmos was made by two French scientists. Using tiny cameras, they recorded the everyday trials and tribulations of the insect world, ranging from the uphill struggle of a laden dung beetle to the ants' knack of drinking from a raindrop without drowning in it. Admission £3.
