Campus view: What students think of college rankings

With the news Irish universities have failed to rank in the top-200 for the first time in the latest set of global rankings, Niall Sargent asked students do college rankings matter.

Jemil Saidi (19), is from Ennis, Co Clare, and is a third-year in Engineering with Management, TCD. “It will forever hold its name as Trinity College and be one of the best, but as time goes on I feel like more students are going to be wiser enough to choose colleges that are actually the best for their own specific course. They need to put more money into the college, into the student life.”

Yazeed Al-Harthi, (26), is from Saudi Arabia and is in the second year of Medicine at RCSI, Dublin. “It’s the main factor because when you’re going to something you don’t know, you need some official website to tell you the ranking. You need some ranking to put you on the right path. So ranking for me, and I think for a lot of my colleagues, is number one and the main factor to choose college anywhere. Even when you go to a restaurant, you look at Trip Advisor to know the ranking of the restaurant. Colleges are the same.”
