An Art project designed to send seasonal goodwill from Ireland's primary schools to the suffering children of the world has had its deadline extended to January 25th.

Smile to the World involves the creation of a huge banner (30m long and 5.5m high), a photomontage incorporating artwork from primary schools all over the island of Ireland.

Smile to the World packs were sent to schools in early December. Each participating school is asked to hold an art competition across all age groups. Up to 12 pictures per school can be submitted; one from each school will be selected for incorporation into the banner. The thousands of images will be arranged to create the effect of a rainbow when seen from a distance.

The original call was for Christmas images. Now, says organiser Kevin Farrell, "we are asking teachers to return joyful and happy pictures and paintings (e.g. the joy of spring) that will help to bring a smile to the world of other children." Organisers plan to present the finished banner to children who lost loved ones on September 11th.
