Chinese course:
A new course in TCD - business studies and Chinese - is now available through the CAO, although not listed in the handbook. People who have applied already can use the change-of-mind facility to list it up to Wednesday, July 1st. The course code is TR 088/ BSCH. There will be an open evening on Wednesday, May 6th, at the Davis Theatre, Arts Building, TCD. Students should contact the admissions office or Patrick McCabe at the School of Business Studies, TCD - phone (01) 677 2941.
Medical engineers: Dublin City University will introduce a new degree course - Medical Mechanical Engineering - in 1999. The course, which will take in about 20 students initially, is the first undergraduate programme in the Republic training graduates for the medical device industry.
Entrepreneurs: Budding entrepreneurs take note, more than 300 secondary schools, and a total of 8,000 students, took part in this year's Young Entrepreneurs Scheme, making it the largest competition of its kind in Ireland. The national final was held last Sunday in O'Reilly Hall at UCD. Forbairt is the national and regional sponsor of the competition. We'll publish the names and schools of the main winners next week in this column.
Summer activities: Students in south Dublin may like to know that the Dun Laoghaire Youth Information Centre has details on summer camps, computer courses, and indoor/outdoor adventure courses and hostelling, festivals and other events. The centre, which is a Catholic Youth Council/ Dun Laoghaire Vocational Education Committee Project, is based at Bell Tower, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire at (01) 280 9363.
Family Day: A special Family Day kicks off on Saturday May 23rd, free of charge, at the National Gallery of Ireland with dance, music, song, painting, puppetry agus spraoi go leor. The Waterford dragon will welcome visitors into the gallery. Music will be provided by Treasa O'Donnell on the harp. Also "Saturdays for Families at the National Gallery of Ireland" takes place throughout the year starting at 3 p.m. on June 6th. It runs all year except July, August and December. There is no admission charge.
Lorca festival: For culture vultures in the capital, the Dublin Lorca Festival will take place from Monday June 22nd to Saturday July 18th. It will be staged in the Crypt Arts Centre in Dublin Castle. The festival features a new production of Lorca's Blood Wedding where passion collides with convention as a woman runs away with her married lover on her own wedding day!
