Any young mathematicians out there? First-year students who are in competitive mood may like to enter the Irish Junior Mathematics 1998 Competition. The annual event, organised by the Irish Mathematics Teachers Association, is suitable for first-year second-level students. Students should register through their schools (cost £10). Crime Pays:

The security industry wants young people's views on crime! An award will be presented to a team of up to four young people aged between 13 and 18 who produce the best project on crime. Organised by the Irish Security Industry Association, the competition offers a cash prize of £500 plus £250 worth of equipment for a school, youth club or community group nominated by the winning team. New Designs:

Budding coutouriers, designers, fashion junkies or artists may like to check out an exhibition of work by National Council for Vocational Awards (NCVA) graduates in art, craft and design. The Designers of the Future exhibition is on at the Guinness Hopstores, St James's Gate, Dublin. It's open between Monday and Saturday from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

DIT Invite:

Students in sixth year may like to attend a series of information sessions being held at DIT colleges. No pre-booking is necessary for the series, which will be run over the next three weeks. The sessions will be held between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Today's session will focus on marketing at Bolton Street and on paramedical science at Kevin Street. Tomorrow it's geo-surveying at Bolton Street and hospitality management/tourism/leisure management at Kevin Street. Next Monday night Kevin Street will host an evening on computer studies, while over at Bolton Street, students can find out more about food science, health care, environmental health and environmental resources management.
