How long has the course been running?

Brand new this autumn.

Why was it introduced?

Because of emerging career opportunities and to meet the growing need for a more sophisticated and multidisciplinary approach to special education, according to course director, Dr Brendan Spelman. There is no other such course at master's level in the Republic.

Is there anything unusual about the course?

Yes. It's a collaborative venture between UCD's education department, the Centre for the Study of Developmental Disability and the Centre for Social and Vocational Rehabilitation.

Who is the course aimed at?

Teachers and other professionals involved in the education, care and management of children and adolescents with special educational needs and disabilities.

How many admitted to the course?

15

Entry requirements:

Teachers must have an honours primary degree and have completed a one year course in remedial or special education. Other professionals working in related areas must have a good degree in their specialisms and at least three years' experience working with children with special needs.

Course content:

Includes management, legal and international perspectives on special needs education. Other areas covered include new perspectives on assessment, diagnosis and education of children in the core disability areas, new therapies and technologies associated with the education of special needs children and new models of parent-professional relationships and family support.
