An art student from Denmark, by way of Castleknock, Dublin, was the winner of a silver-service design competition for students of the National College of Art and Design (NCAD).

NCAD student Carina Cecilia Saatterup beat off 17 competitors to take first prize. She is studying for a bachelor of design degree, specialising in precious metals. "I used organic shapes to create cutlery that appeals to the touch," she said.

The 18 competing students worked since December with NCAD metalwork-design lecturers Derek McGarry and Michael Cunningham, and guest silversmith Brian Clarke. The competition was sponsored by contract-catering firm Eurest Sutcliffe. Raw materials were supplied on loan by Cookson Precious Metals.

Saatterup says she wants to continue her travelling, teaching and working as a freelance designer. Her work now becomes part of the permanent collection of precious-metal objects at the National Museum, Collins Barracks, Dublin.
