DIT'S rag week, which was held last month, raised a total of £16,000 for charity. The two charities chosen by DIT's students' union council to benefit from the week were the Meningitis Research Foundation and the Marie Keating Cancer Fund.
Boyzone's Ronan Keating accepted half of the rag proceeds for the charity named after his mother; the cheque was presented to him by DIT students' union president Ross O'Daly. Colman Byrne of the Meningitis Research Fund was presented with another £8,000; Byrne is a former president of DIT students' union and of USI. O'Daly estimates 12,000 DIT students took part in events in Dublin city centre and trips to Waterford and Galway. He said the amount raised "really is proof that students don't only think about themselves".
Meanwhile, the students' union at UCC is still receiving money from pledges made during its rag week in January. Officers are confident that the total proceeds of the week will top £20,000.
