If your new year resolution is to get your computer skills up to speed it may be worth looking at the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) qualification. The ECDL evaluates and certifies seven computer skills according to a single European standard and the licence is recognised across the EU. Once you start the process you have up to two years in which to complete and pass all the elements. If you are already familiar with computers you may only need a little top-up training to do the exams. If you're new to computers it would be worth enrolling in a recognised training course. ECDL courses are run around the State and there is a list of training centres available on the ECDL website at www.ecdl.ie or you can also phone (01) 6673153 for a list. The ECDL is ideal for those who want or need computer skills for their job. If your main need is for enough knowledge to tap out emails to your nearest and dearest or to access the Internet or shop online, then it is probably too detailed. In this case you'd probably be better off with a short introductory course which covers these elements. Check with your local adult education centre or VEC or community school/college to see what computer courses they have on offer.
