TEACHERS' professional lives is the subject of a public lecture to be given by, Professor Andy Hargreaves at St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, Dublin, on May 9th at 7.30 p.m.
Hargreaves is director of the International Centre for Educational Change at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, Toronto, Canada. Before moving to North America in 1987, he taught in primary school and lectured in several English universities. He has held visiting professorships in England, Australia, Spain and Japan.
When he visited Ireland in 1993, he gave a public lecture on "Cultures of Teaching" in St Patrick's College to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the INTO. Dr Ciaran Sugrue, who organised the upcoming lecture (which is sponsored by CJ Fallon and Co), says that Hargreave's topic on this occasion is particularly propitious given recent controversy surrounding a "new deal" for teachers.
Exhorting teachers and others interested in education to attend, Dr Sugrue says "this is important opportunity, not to be missed, to hear a leading authority and innovate thinker in the fields of teacher development, the culture of the school and educational reform".
