STUDENT MEDIA: University College Dublin has cleaned up at the O2 Student Media Awards for 2002 after winning eight awards. The students' union publication, the UCD Observer won the award for "Student Newspaper of the Year" and "'Publication of the Year". The newspaper's editor, Daniel McConnell, and reporter Enda Curran also won prizes.

UCD's College Tribune won the award for the "Most Improved Publication or Production" and LHM was presented with the award for "Best Magazine/Society Publication". That magazine's editor, Johnny Ryan, picked up the award for "Features Writer of the Year". Not surprisingly, UCD was also named "Media College of the Year".

The awards, organised by oxygen.ie, are now in their second year.

According to the judges: "The UCD Observer has developed great confidence in terms of its layout, expression and content. Its 'O2' section is a first-rate mix of review and opinion which would stand comparison with some of the most professional newspapers in the land."
