`TO optimise a career in the tourism industry it is necessary to understand international as well as national tourism. A professional course of studies involving subjects such as marketing, economics, touristic geography, law and tourism, new enterprise development and many more is essential to enhance your career prospects in tourism."
So says Mary Ryder, head of the department of Tourism Studies at LSB College in Dublin. The college offers a number of academic programmes that prepare students for work in tourism.
An NCEA-validated BA in Tourism Studies is designed to supply the tourist industry with graduates trained in business and management skills. Between second and third years, students undertake a three-month period of work experience in the industry.
Other tourism courses available at LSB include a National Certificate in Business Studies with an option to specialise in travel and tourism during second year. As part of their graduate Diploma in Business Studies, post-graduates can specialise in heritage and tourism management. The Institute of Commercial Management also validates a one-year Diploma in Tourism Studies available at the college.
