If you feel you should have some certification in computer proficiency but you don't know where to start it may be worth investing time in getting the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) qualification. The ECDL evaluates and certifies computer skills according to a single European standard and the licence is recognised across the EU. To get the licence candidates must prove they are proficient in seven basic computer skills (such as wordprocessing, spreadsheets etc.) and candidates have up to two years in which to pass the seven elements once they've begun the certification process.

If you are already familiar with computers you may need very little training to do the exams. If you're new to computers it may be a good idea to sign up for a recognised training course. ECDL courses are run around the State and there is a list of training centres available on the ECDL website at www.ecdl.ie or you can also phone (01) 6673153 for a list.
