Iarnrod Eireann is one of the largest employers in Ireland with some 5,000 employees. There are 125 stations and almost 3,000 kilometres of track. In 1998, the company carried almost 10 million passengers on mainline rail services and over 21 million on the DART service

Basic salary £272.90 a week; 20 per cent allowance for one-person operation and one-sixth allowance for shift. There are also overtime payments and other allowances may be payable. Negotiations are ongoing to tilt the balance towards a more favourable basic salary with drivers working a five-day week (over the full seven days)
