Railway operations: depot-person progressing to ticket checker, signal-person, locomotive driver and supervisor
Civil engineering: plate-layer, apprentice, craft-worker and mechanical engineer progressing to ganger, supervisor and senior engineering posts

Basic salary £272.90 a week; 20 per cent allowance for one-person operation and one-sixth allowance for shift. There are also overtime payments and other allowances may be payable. Negotiations are ongoing to tilt the balance towards a more favourable basic salary with drivers working a five-day week (over the full seven days)
