Professor Brian Harvey is vice-president of research and professor of the department of physiology at University College Cork.

Current claim to fame: the man who has helped UCC secure €126.97 million from the Higher Education Authority under the PRTLI funding scheme. The €79.49 million award in the latest round, cycle 3, is the highest funding ever secured by a college under PRTLI and will include a €28.7 million postgraduate research library. UCC's success rate in the EU fifth framework is running at twice the EU average.

The college secured two awards under Science Foundation Ireland's first round of funding.
