Education: St Colman's College, Newry; QUB: BSc chemistry 1972; BAgr agricultural chemistry 1973; PhD nutritional biochemistry 1976; Dip Ed (technical and further education) Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, 1980; registered nutritionist.

Career: 1977-81 lecturer/senior lecturer in science, Newcastle College of Advanced Education, Australia; 1981-84 lecturer in life sciences, Ulster Polytechnic; 1984-88 lecturer in human nutrition, University of Ulster; 1988-91 senior lecturer in human nutrition, UU; 1991-94 Reader in human nutrition, UU: 1995 to date professor of human nutrition, UU; 2001 to date co-director Centre for Molecular Biosciences.

Research interests: trace elements and disease, B vitamins and homocysteine metabolism, diet and antioxidant defence, dietary surveys, lipid metabolism.

Professional affiliations include: founding member of the Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance (IUNA), a formal association of the nutrition units at UCC, TCD and UU; member of Food Safety Promotion Advisory Board; chairman of the scientific advisory committee to the FSPB; chairman of the Stimulant Drinks Committee; member of the physiological physiological medicine and infections board of the Medical Research Council; member of the Royal Irish Academy.
