A well-behaved dog is a pleasure but a disobedient dog is a pain and, while some dogs are born angelic, most have to be taught the rudiments of acceptable social behaviour. The Irish Kennel Club runs dog obedience and awareness classes on Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m. at its showground at Cloghran, just beside Dublin airport. A number of expert dog handlers are on hand each week to teach the basics of obedience and give tips on grooming, showing and nutrition. Dogs - and humans - of all ages are welcome.
Pups and young dogs will derive considerable benefit from the training, but it's good for settling older dogs too and owners experiencing behavioural problems with older animals often find that exposure to formal discipline helps. Owners with dogs who need an outlet for their boundless energy can also use these classes as a stepping stone to agility training. Information for those interesting in trying agility is also available through the classes. The Irish Kennel Club is contactable at (01) 453 3300 but those wishing to join a class don't need to book in advance, just turn up any Tuesday night at 8p.m.
