Q: My sister became very ill so she couldn't sit the Leaving Cert and thus has to repeat next year. So can she repeat the Leaving Cert next year without registering/attending a school but only attend evening grinds? If yes, where can she sit the exam?
A:
The answer to the first question is yes. She can just attend evening grinds. She can sit the exam in any school providing that she registers with the school as an external candidate. I recommend that you look up www.examinations.ie. You will find more information there.
The best of luck with it.
Q: I got 315 points and am interested in arts or psychology. What do you think is best route for me? Should I repeat or is a PLC course a better route?
A:
Repeating should only be considered after serious consideration and discussion with your parents and possibly your school. You should only be repeating if you really think you can significantly improve your performance next year. To get into pure psychology you need approx. 200 more points. Depending where you want to do it, you actually have the points for arts in NUIG and approx. another 50 points you would be able to do it in another few colleges. In NUIG you have a route to psychology through Arts but it is not certain, you have to be in the top bracket of students to be offered a place in 2nd year pure psychology. Getting a place in psychology and arts through a PLC course could be quite competitive for a limited number of places.
Q: Is it possible to repeat just one subject in Leaving Cert? And where can you repeat the exam?
A:
Yes it is possible to repeat one subject in the Leaving Cert. There are a number of formal repeat options for students to consider including: repeating in their original school if they allow it, a specialised repeat centre, a private grind school and a special repeat stream in another secondary school. Each locality offers different options.
You can also study privately and just register as an external candidate to sit the subject(s) in an exam centre of your choice by going on to the examinations.ie website and clicking on ‘registering as an external student’
