Not everyone has the time to do an MBA, yet there are many senior managers who would like the sort of training MBA students get without the same level of time commitment, says the Irish Management Institute's director of research, Dr John Mangan, who is running the senior executives programme which starts in Cork on February 19th.

"The advanced management programme aims to give senior managers a concentrated opportunity over a 15-day period to hone their skills in a way that will enable them to move their careers in management forward," he says.

"Recognising that participants will be investing significant time and money in this programme, we have developed a very focused programme with high-level goals. We have put together an international team of teaching specialists involved in innovation, employment relations and HRM, manufacturing, organisational behaviour, research, strategy, accounting and management."

The programme is aimed at those who hold senior positions in functional areas but who are interested in moving into general management.

"It is ideal for those who are thinking of broadening their experience and who would like to familiarise themselves with leading thought and practice in general management," says Mangan.

The programme is spread over five three-day modules which run from Tuesday to Thursday. The cost of the programme is €5,650 for corporate members of the IMI and €7,066 for non-members. The programme will cover leadership and effectiveness, marketing and business strategy, people management and organisational behaviour, finance and international business, operations and supply-chain management.

The programme runs from February to June this year at Maryborough House Hotel and Mangan hopes its Cork base will appeal to senior managers in Munster and beyond. "Dublin has become difficult to get to with the current traffic congestion so we think there may be people who would prefer to hop on a train and go south because it would be easier," he says.
