This week In my life talks to Derek Mooney
Current job: Broadcaster. Presenter of the National Lottery show on RTÉ.
What schools did you go to? St Mary's Primary School, Donnybrook; St Mary's Boys' National School, Donnybrook; Stilorgan Vocational School; Christian Brothers Secondary School, Dún Laoghaire
Best subject? English and Science
Worst subject? I'm rather embarrassed to admit that it was Irish.
What's the boldest thing you ever did in school? I was a model student. Though I do remember having to do knitting and Irish dancing in primary school and they were "punishments" for wrongdoing. So I must have done something bold.
Who was your favourite teacher and why? I had a woodwork teacher called Aidan Rudden. He was an excellent craftsman, patient and a good laugh.
Who was the object of your first crush? Are you seriously expecting me to answer that question? It was unrequited.
What was your earliest career ambition? To be on the Late Late Toy Show. I'm not kidding.
Were you cool or nerdy at school? Neither, really. I was the average Joe. A couple of close friends.
Did you go to college? No
What song most reminds you of your school days? The theme song to M*A*S*H, Suicide is painless.
What would you look for when choosing a school for your own children? I don't have children and I'm not likely to have any so I can't answer.
Were your school days the best days of your life? No, not particularly, nor were they the worst. I was bubbling with ambition and dreams as a kid. Those who really knew me would probably look back and say "overheating". School for me was just a regulator.
