Worst subject? When my father saw my Inter Cert science grade he said: "Well, they won't be sending our Seán to the moon."

What's the boldest thing you ever did in school? Occasionally lit up at break time without using the designated sixth-year smoking room.

Who was your favourite teacher and why? The English teacher Frank Canavan. He treated us like adults long before we deserved it and his good-humoured patience was sometimes rewarded.

Who was the object of your first crush? Only the guilty should be named and shamed.

What was your earliest career ambition? To become, ahem, editor of The Irish Times. Made it as far as a hilarious rumour.

Were you cool or nerdy at school? Definitely not nerdy.

Did you go to college? NUI Galway, BA, 1977.

What song most reminds you of your school days? Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel.

What would you look for when choosing a school for your own children? An ethos that encourages them to think big and to use all their spiritual, academic, sporting and social talents.
