Workplace relationship skills are the focus of a course for mature students interested in getting back into the paid workforce. Olive Keogh reports
In a few weeks time, the first group of students on the new social and workplace relationship skills course at St Kevin's College, Clogher Road, Dublin, will finish their course. A group of 16 students ranging in age from mid 20s to early 40s made up the first intake and almost the entire group will complete the course, which is a source of some satisfaction for co-ordinator Mary Phillips.
"For many students the course provides a second chance to gain the education and qualifications they want for a new beginning in personal, business or community life," she says. "The course equips students with the knowledge and social skills to deal with people in a professional and businesslike way. Effective workplace relationships are required for marketing, to run and access information and services and to take on management roles. This course is of particular benefit to those who wish to be self-employed in a small business, a service or caring venture, or who seek to manage such a business or venture."
Entry to the course is by interview. Specific academic qualifications are not required and applications are welcome from VTOS students and mature learners. Grant assistance may be available in certain cases and childcare facilities are provided at the college. The course is certified by NUI Maynooth.
Most of the learning on the course takes place through discussion. Students are encouraged to contribute from their own experiences, knowledge and skills. The course content includes an introduction to psychology and behavioural studies, human growth and development, marketing and communication and relationships in the workplace. There are also modules in areas such as computers and word processing. There is also a work-experience element.
"Classes are lively and enjoyable and I think the students have ended up with a better understanding of themselves and of other people," says Mary Phillips. "They are now looking at potential job opportunities in the local area in positions such as classroom assistants, daycare assistants and in community information services."
The next intake of students is in September and anyone interested should contact the college without delay. Contact: telephone (01) 453 6397, e-mail info@stkevins.cdvec.ie. The website is http://homepage.eircom.net/~clogher
