Teachers who want to encourage young people to be informed, responsible and active citizens will attend a conference next Saturday in Marino Institute of Education, Griffith Avenue, Dublin. Speakers include Mary Banotti, MEP; John Hammond, of the National Council for Curriculum Assessment and Sister Marie Celine Clegg, president of the Association of Management of Catholic Secondary Schools and the Joint Managerial Body.
The conference aims to present teachers with "a new programme for active citizenship" to transform young people into civic-minded and socially-aware individuals. The programme, developed in the United States, has already been piloted in schools and community groups around the country. The day starts at 10 a.m. For information, contact the organisers, the Vincentian Partnership for Justice, at Ozanam House, 53 Mountjoy Square, Gardiner Street, Dublin - phone (01) 878 0425.
