SISTER Marie Celine Clegg, principal of Loreto College in Swords, is the newly-elected president of the Association of Management of Catholic Secondary Schools (AMCSS), which represents the management and principals of 440 secondary schools.
Sean Burke, principal of St Patrick's College in Tuam, Co Galway, is the association's newly-elected vice-president. He has been principal of the college since 1990.
"The education system is changing rapidly and we will have a very active part to play in responding to that change, particularly to the pace of change," Sister Clegg says. "The Education Bill is putting a lot of emphasis on respecting diversity; we would see it also as respecting the identity of all types of schools and their ethos."
She has been chairwoman of one of the AMCSS's 10 regions for the past three years and been a member of the Council of Management of Catholic Secondary Schools and Joint Managerial Body for three years. Since 1988, she has been principal of Loreto College in Swords and chairperson of the board of management of Loreto Abbey in Dalkey for the past six years.
Originally from Saltmills in the Hook area of Co Wexford, she was also principal of Loreto College in Milford between 1978 and 1988, and principal of Loreto College, North Great George's Street between 1986 and 1988.
