College counsellors have found that the number of students seeking counselling is increasing every year, yet Ireland is still seriously under-resourced in the area of third-level counselling and health services. The Irish Association of University and College Counsellors recommends a ratio of one counsellor to every 2,000 students. The ratio at present is closer to one to 5,000. In a survey of colleges conducted by E&L at the end of last year, only Athlone RTC, Tallaght RTC and the NCAD met the IAUCC's recommended ratio, while a number of colleges, including the DIT and UCG, had a ratio of better than one to 3,000. The colleges with the poorest ratios included UCD (one to 7,000), TCD (one to 6,000) and UCC (roughly one to 5,000).
