To savour the cut and thrust of a recruitment fair, Leaving Certificate students may like to attend the first Careers Fair at Sligo IT, which is being held today. Over 40 companies will be exhibiting at this fair, which is one of the North-West's first career events of this type. The fair will start at 10 a.m. and finish at 4 p.m. Sligo IT is just on the outskirts of Sligo town. For more information contact the college's careers and graduates office at (071) 55403.

St Valentine's Day is the closing date for receipt of application forms to the Seachtain na Gaeilge art competition. The winners will be exhibited during Seachtain na Gaeilge which runs from, March 10th to the 17th. Prizes will include Sony Playstations and a Raleigh bicycle. The competition has three age categories: from 4 to 6 years, 7 to 9 years and 10 to 12 years.

The week of Irish language related activities is being organised by Conradh na Gaeilge. The first round of the "Cork Begins Here" inter-school debating competition for Transition Year students in Cork city and county, organised by St Fin Barre's Beyond 2000 group, kicks off this week. To date, 19 schools are taking part. The motion for the first round is "that the influx of refugees has challenged our understanding of Ireland's identity". German language students may like to note that a number of screenings of the German film, Jenseits der Stille (Beyond Silence), will get under way this week, starting in Kilkenny Cineplex on Thursday at 10 a.m. Next Monday it will move to Garter Lane Theatre in Waterford, scheduled to begin at the same time. On Friday, 11th, it will be shown in Cork's Kino Cinema at 10.30 a.m. There will be an afternoon screening at 1.30 p.m. when it opens on Tuesday, 15th in Limerick's Omniplex and at the same time on Thursay 17th in Nenagh's Ormond Cinema. It will be in Athlone on Tuesday, 22nd; Ballina's Savoy Cinema on Friday 25th, and back to Dublin's IFC on Tuesday 29th. There will be a further three showings in March at the IFC also.
