Open Days for Aspiring Jockeys

The Racing Academy & Centre of Education (R.A.C.E.) in Kildare is holding an open day today from

2 p.m. Students, parents and guidance counsellors are invited to find out more about the trainee jockey course.

The 10-month residential course is sponsored by FÁS and combines practical riding instruction and work placement with FETAC modules in racehorse care and exercise, stable and yard routine, IT, maths etc. Candidates must be between 15 and 18 years of age and be under nine stone in weight.

Public Lectures at UCC

The UCC/ESBI W.B. Yeats Lecture by Professor Roy Foster, Carroll Professor of Irish History, University of Oxford is titled "Philosophy and Passion: Yeats, Ireland and Europe" and will take place on Thursday, June 3rd at

4 p.m. in Boole II Lecture Theatre, UCC.

"Forty Years of Cosmic Background Radiation" by Dr Robert W. Wilson of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, as part of The President's Distinguished Guest Lecture Series, takes place on Thursday, June 3rd at 7 p.m. in the Boole III Lecture Theatre, UCC.

Association of Teachers of English Summer School

The 2004 Association of Teachers of English Summer School will take place on Monday, June 14th and Tuesday, June 15th in the Dublin Writers' Museum in Parnell Square. Irish Software Association Prize For Third-Level Students

The Irish Software Association (ISA) has announced its inaugural award for the most innovative and commercially viable software developed by a third-level student. Sponsored by Trinity Venture Capital, the winner will receive a 5,000 cash award and subsequent guidance from the firm in developing the business concept. Submissions are due in October 2004 and the winner will be announced in November. The ISA is asking the presidents of third-level institutions across the State to nominate two candidates from their institution for consideration.
