Research Bursaries in Science, Engineering and Technology
The Embark Initiative is offering funding totalling over 6.9 million for its Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme 2004. The scheme will support 120 researchers. The scholarship scheme applies to science, engineering and technology- related research by individuals pursuing Master's or doctorate qualifications in recognised third-level establishments.
All students graduating with higher honours in these disciplines are entitled to apply for funding, but must be entering into research for the first time in October 2004. A decision to grant funding is based on the student's academic record, research preparation and a personal statement. Only candidates who excel in their final examinations are likely to be successful.
A maximum of €19,050 will be available to students, of which 12,700 will go directly to the student, with the remainder available to fund other forms of support such as fees, appropriate travel and allowed expenses.
Funding will be available for up to three years to outstanding students, though this time period may be revised to cater for students whose research demands a longer period of time.
A second call will offer funding to a further 30 research candidates. This will bring the total number of offers to 150. This call will be open to candidates proposing to commence a research degree for the first time this autumn.
