WIT Lecture on the Scientific mind of Joyce The Centre for Advancement of Learning of Maths, Science and Technology (CALMAST) at the Waterford Institute of Technology has organised an event to mark the 100th anniversary of Bloomsday

Dr Michael Howlett, head of the Department of Applied Arts at WIT will give a talk entitled "The Fascination For Maths, Science and Engineering in the Mind of Joyce," which will highlight Joyce's use of science and scientific language, particularly in Ulysses.

The talk takes place today in the Meeting Room of the Royal Irish Academy, Dawson St, Dublin 2 at 6.30 p.m . It will be followed by a reception in the Members' Room. Admission is free but booking is necessary. Contact Claire Mulhall, tel: (051) 302015; e-mail: cbmulhall@wit.ie

Primary Schools' Opera with the National Chamber Choir

Pupils from six Dublin primary schools in Dublin have been working with the National Chamber Choir (NCC) to produce their own version of The Quest, an opera project for children. Tomorrow at 6.30 p.m. in St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, Dublin, the NCC hosts, "The Quest Revealed", featuring an exhibition and performance of The Quest. The performance will be given by pupils of the participating six schools accompanied by the NCC.

The Quest Revealed exhibition features props, sets, costumes, backdrops and artwork made by the children, as well as photographs from each of the schools' productions. The exhibition will be open to the public from Thursday, June 24th from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Portfolio Preparation Course

A portfolio preparation course will be held at St Peter's College, Dunboyne, Co Meath, from Wednesday June 30th to Friday July 9th, for students wishing to attend third-level art and design college. Aimed at fifth, sixth and Transition Year students, the course will help them to develop a portfolio of drawing, sculpture, and other artwork. Also, visiting artists will talk about their careers. Science, Engineering and Technology Research Scholarships

The Embark Initiative, operated by the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology, has linked with IBM to fund researchers in a number of new placement fellowships at IBM's Centre for Advanced Studies in Dublin. The initiative is intended to broaden Irish academic experience through exposure to commercially-orientated research practices and technological advancements within industry. Up to six doctorate and Master's level researchers will be appointed as Embark IBM Faculty Scholars at the IBM Dublin Software Laboratory. Details of how to apply for these positions will be posted on the IRCSET website ( http://www.ircset.ie) before the end of June 2004.

New courses at Dún Laoghaire Institute

The School of Business and Humanities at IADT (Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology) is offering the following new courses from September 2004:

Bachelor of Business Studies (Honours) - This is a one-year, add-on degree. Applicants must hold a national diploma in business or equivalent. Attendance will be two nights per week, supplemented with Saturday workshops.Foundation Certificate (one year) - There are no formal entry requirements except that an applicant must be over 21 years of age and wish to further their education at third level. Making Your Experience Count (one year on alternative weeks) - This course is designed to help adults analyse their past experience and present their most relevant learning and achievement in a portfolio based on the principle of accredited prior learning which will enable participants to identity a learning path and access higher education. Engineering at DCU

The schools of engineering at DCU invite applications for postgraduate programmes in telecommunications engineering, electronic systems, and computer-aided mechanical and manufacturing engineering.

These are programmes of study designed to cater for the differing needs of potential applicants. Study can take place on-campus at DCU or via web-based distance learning.

There are a variety of entry routes to facilitate different levels of qualification. There is also the opportunity to study individual high-level modules in electronic and telecommunications engineering via the web. There are two intakes per year to the programmes (September and February) to facilitate further flexibility. Research degrees at master's and doctoral level are also offered. NCAD Student Exhibition

The NCAD/CEAD (Continuing Education - Art and Design) student exhibition will be held in the Design Building, National College of Art and Design, 100 Thomas St, Dublin 8, from Friday July 2nd to Sunday July 4th. Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.

Dyslexia Summer Courses for Children

An early intervention summer course for children aged six to 11 will be held from July 5th to July 22nd in Sandymount, Dublin.
