Fulbright Awards for Study/Research in the US
Applications are now invited for the Irish Fulbright Commission's annual awards programme for the 2005-06 academic year. Awards in the range €€15,000 to €€18,000 will be made to graduate students who wish to pursue postgraduate studies in the US. There will also be a number of post-doctoral scholar awards of up to €€10,000 for one academic year. Applicants must be in a position to outline a clearly defined course of study or research and must obtain their own placements in the US. The closing date for applications is November 12th. Engineering Lecture at Dublin Institute of Technology
Dr David Kennedy of the Faculty of Engineering at University College Cork will give a lecture on developments in surface engineering and surface coatings in room 259, DIT Bolton Street at 6.15 p.m. on Thursday, October 7th. Open Day at University College Cork
UCC's open day takes place next Saturday, October 9th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Talks on each undergraduate honours degree programme will be repeated regularly throughout the day. Students can take tours of campus, the library and the Mardyke Sports Arena. Students will be able to discuss each degree programme, career options and entry procedures with university staff and current students. Prospective students, parents and teachers are welcome.

Future Choices Seminar at UCD
A one-day seminar for Leaving Certificate students and their parents will be held in UCD on Saturday, October 9th. The seminar will focus on possible career choices and CAO applications. It will also cover entry into British and US universities and the possibility of making use of a gap year. The course will be conducted by Career Opportunities in association with Student Enrichment Services. The seminar will run from 10.30 a.m. until 3.30 p.m. and the cost of a family ticket is €€135 (single ticket €€85). Enquiries to (01) 494 7927.
European Piano Teachers' Association Masterclass
EPTA Ireland present a masterclass with John O'Conor on Sunday, October 10th at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Chatham Row, Dublin 2 from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. The masterclass is open to all and observers are welcome. University College Cork Lecture
Fergal Keane, author and award-winning BBC correspondent, will give a lecture entitled "The Essential Gesture" as part of The President's Distinguished Guest Lecture Series on Tuesday, October 12th at 7.30 p.m. in the Boole IV Lecture Theatre at UCC.
