Sporting Chance Programme for Careers in the Sports and Leisure Industry

Sporting Chance is a new training programme designed by National Learning Network (NLN) to enable people with disabilities and others who are marginalised to build careers as coaches, leaders and managers in the sports and leisure industry.

Operating from the NLN's centre in Tralee, Co Kerry and run in conjunction with the Institute of Technology Tralee and fully accredited by Fetac, some 20 candidates are being sought for the programme, which starts this month and will run until December, 2008. There are no course fees as it is fully funded by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. A training allowance is paid to successful candidates, plus an equipment budget for course requirements .

DIT Celebrating 50 Years of Engineering Education

This year marks the golden jubilee of professional engineering education at the Bolton Street campus of the Dublin Institute of Technology. To celebrate, the faculty of engineering will hold a series of events throughout the year.

The first event will be a talk by Prof Gerry Byrne, The Engineer of the Future. The lecture will take place tomorrow in Lecture Hall 259, DIT Bolton Street at 6.30pm.

Conference of The National Centre for Franco-Irish Studies

On Thursday, May 10th and Friday, May 11th, IT Tallaght is hosting the third conference of the National Centre for Franco-Irish Studies. The theme for the two days is Issues of Modernity and Postmodernity in a Franco-Irish Context. Inter-varsity Science Communication Final

The national inter-varsity science communication final, Science Speak, takes place in the RDS Concert Hall on Thursday, May 3rd. A postgraduate finalist from each of the Republic's seven universities will present their research in an easy to understand manner to a lay audience in a competition that will test both their communication skills and their ability to make their science accessible to all.

UCD College of Human Sciences Graduate Student Symposium

The programme, which will take place at the UCD Global Irish Institute on Wednesday, May 9th from 9.30am to 5.30pm, features keynote contributions from Mary Davies, chief executive of Special Olympics Ireland and the chairwoman of the Task Force on Active Citizenship and Prof Frances Ruane, director, the Economic and Social Research Institute, with sessions and panels featuring the research of UCD graduate students.
