Conference on Educational Disadvantage

“Educational Disadvantage: Theory and Practice” is the title of a conference to be held at Collinstown Park Community College, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 on Monday, November 9th from 9am. The Learning Innovation Network is holding its annual conference with the theme “Motivating Learners through Creative Approaches to Assessment”, on Thursday, October 15th in the Sheraton Hotel in Athlone. The keynote speakers are Prof John Biggs and Prof Ranald Macdonald. Music in the Classroom

There is still some availability for concerts based on the Junior Cert syllabus. Gearoid Grant will conduct the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in the National Concert Hall, following a programme of the Junior Cert set works. Teachers interested in bringing a class along should e-mail mitc@irishtimes.com for details on how to apply for tickets.

UL Careers Fair

The University of Limerick Careers Fair takes place in the University of Limerick on Thursday, October 15th. The fair will feature more than 80 organisations. This in open event aimed primarily at final-year and postgraduate students and recent graduates. Details are available at: ul.ie/careers. Contact mary.sweeney@ul.ie.

Art in the Classroom

The next issue of Art in the Classroom will be published with The Irish Times on Tuesday, October 20th. Schools can pre-order copies at a special rate. E-mail: anseo@irishtimes.com. This issue will look at printing, children’s illustrators and the Chester Beatty Library.

eTwinning Weeks 2009 are being organised to focus on encouraging schools and teachers to get involved in eTwinning this autumn.

eTwinning is a simple and straightforward way of finding a partner school in Europe to work together on a range of activities, using information and communication technologies.

Society of Chemistry Public Lecture

Prof Tomas J Meyer, University of North Carolina, will present a lecture – “Our Energy Future: Science, Technology, and Policy Challenges for the 21st Century” – in the Large Lecture Theatre, School of Chemistry, Trinity College Dublin, at 6pm on Tuesday, October 20th.
