Almost 18,000 teachers in the second-level, community and comprehensive schools will get an information guide on pensions this week. The booklet was launched in Dublin yesterday by the Minister for Education and Science, Micheal Martin.
The question-and-answer format deals with many typical situations including a fully worked-out scenario where pension benefits are calculated in a typical retirement situation.
According to the Department, this is the most comprehensive document on teachers' pensions that has been issued by the Department since the introduction of the Secondary Teachers' Supperannuation Scheme in 1929. Launching the guide, the Minister said: "It is hoped that the booklet will meet the need for information, will give teachers a better understanding of the superannuation scheme and will provide answers to the most frequently asked questions that arise in regard to pensions."
Arrangements are being made to supply similar booklets on the superannuation schemes for primary teachers and vocational teachers.
