A demographic dip has left the Oak Park Unified School District with up to 110 places available to children from other districts. Until recently, anxious local parents would queue for hours outside Oak Hills Elementary School each spring to ensure space for their young children in the high-performing school.

To avoid funding cutbacks based on falling numbers, school officials are seeking the transfers. But some parents argue that the move could drag down the district's high test scores and is unfair to residents who pay higher property taxes to live there.
