Anthony Daly of the Backstage Academy of Performing Arts in Galway sees their upcoming production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie as "appropriate and topical" given the "present emphasis in the relationship between teachers and their students". A Theatre-in-Education company, Backstage works with youngsters from eight to 18 - a time in life which covers the age span Miss Brodie had in mind when she famously announced, "give me a girl at an impressionable age . . . and she is mine for life."

Adapted from Muriel Spark's novel, the play looks at the role between educator and people and is described by Daly as "a disturbing portrait of adolescent trauma and lost innocence".

Three guest actors will play the adult roles, with Martina Callinan as Jean Brodie. It can be seen at Galway Town Hall Theatre this Friday and Saturday. Information and tickets from (091) 590706.
