A surprise school inspection at Compton High School, in the notorious Los Angeles suburb, showed some improvement had occurred in the management of facilities at the school.
The inspection was carried out by state education officials and an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) lawyer. Compton High School was subject to a similar surprise inspection in September, along with four other local schools, and failed.
The improvement in facilities since then included repairs on electrical problems and new lighting in hallways. Work remains to be done on toilet facilities. The state of California has been responsible for running Compton's schools since 1993 and has regularly sent in "crisis managers" to evaluate and advise action on the schools. The ACLU has advised the state that it may apply to a judge to have the district held in contempt if there are no more significant improvements in the school buildings, finances and student achievement before the next inspection, due on December 5th.
