JUNIOR CERT GEOGRAPHY:OVER 50,000 Junior Certificate students sat yesterday's higher and ordinary level geography papers, which were praised for their attractive layout and straightforward approach.

"There was plenty of choice on both papers and any student who had done a reasonable amount of preparation should have had no difficulty," said Mary Martin of St Columba's Comprehensive in Glenties.

As well as questions on physical and regional geography, students also tackled economics and global trade.

On question eight students were asked to profile a multinational company and to explore issues of environmental sustainability.

There was also a question on how EU policies have influenced economic development in Ireland.

About one in five students takes the ordinary level paper.

Approximately half of all students go on to take the newly-revised geography syllabus at senior cycle.

Plans are afoot to revise junior cycle geography soon.
