LEAVING CERTIFICATE CHEMISTRY:YESTERDAY'S CHEMISTRY exam was welcomed by teachers and students as fair, with no unexpected questions.

This year, the paper was moved towards the end of the timetable, which may have resulted in fatigue, according to Camille King of the TUI.

“Physics and accounting yesterday would mean students were quite tired, whereas subjects like English might have complemented the paper more,” she said.

Ms King praised the exam, saying it was a comprehensive assessment of the course. “Students who took on board the chief examiner’s report of last year’s exam and were dedicated would have done well,” she said.

At Junior Cert level, metalwork students welcomed yesterday’s paper.

Phelim O’Doherty, the ASTI convenor for metalwork, said that students were “quite happy with the exam. The layout of the paper was brilliant and students would have spent a lot of time on it”.

“Project work done throughout the year was worth up to 75 per cent of the total available marks, he added, so students would have been very confident coming in to do the exam.”
