Junior Certificate Music and Technology: Junior Certificate Music students faced a couple of tough questions on yesterday's higher level paper but were pleased with the general tone of the exam.

There were 8,655 candidates entered to sit yesterday's paper, and some reported difficulties with the later parts of Question 5, on Themes and Variations. Others were fazed by the provision of an entire page to answer one question on a live performance that they had heard.

Mr Jim Rafferty, of Glenties Community School, Donegal, believes his students were happy with the rest of the paper, however.

"As expected, the paper focused on the essential parts of the syllabus. The tape was distinct. Overall the students were happy. They enjoy this subject and it's thriving as a result."

Almost 3,000 students took yesterday's Junior Certificate Technology paper. The exam emphasised design and creativity, which is a true reflection of the 15-year-old syllabus.

"This is a popular course that is attracting a range of different students," Mr Chris Morrin of the TUI said, adding that "819 girls entered to sit this exam, that's almost a third of all candidates and unusual for a technical course like this."

Students were happy with the paper yesterday, which had "no sneaky questions" and plenty of opportunities for students to show their creativity. A Leaving Certificate Technology course is due to begin this year or next.
