Homelessness is a year-round problem, but perhaps people become more aware of those without a home at Christmas time. If you have some time to commit to helping the homeless, the Simon Community would like to hear from you. It has an ongoing need for volunteers and is particularly looking for people who could give a full-time commitment for about six months.
Full-time volunteers are usually in the 18-25 age group and receive a small allowance and accommodation during their time with the community. This placement could provide useful work experience for those thinking about a career in social work or a postgraduate qualification in an associated area.
The community used to have no problem finding full-time volunteers, but not any more. It seems fewer and fewer young Irish people are willing to do this type of work and the community is having to look abroad for new recruits. Those interested in a full-time placement should contact the recruitment co-ordinator at (01) 671 1606. Those who would like to become part-time volunteers should contact their nearest Simon Community. There are bases in Dublin (tel 872 0188), in Dundalk (042) 933 9583, in Galway (091) 589 415 and in Cork (021) 430 0970.
