Over one hundred teachers, in particular guidance counsellors, principals and science teachers, met in the Blarney Park Hotel, Cork, late last month to hear about job opportunities in the electronics, teleservices and software sectors. This was the first meeting in a series which aims to promote greater awarness of the jobs in these areas. It is aimed at principals, science teachers and guidance counsellors.
The programme is being supported by the Forfas National Skills Awareness Campaign, the Cork Industry Electronics Association and IDA Ireland. It is expected that more information meetings will be held from early in January in Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Sligo.
Brian McCoy, of CIEA, said that industry must get the message across of large-scale job opportunities in these fields. "Our aim is to work with teachers and guidance counsellors in order to enable them get this information to school leavers," he said.
The seminars will include details of job opportunities, salaries, educational and travel opportunities in industries and entrance procedures to courses.
