PROMOTION after five years and a posting to somewhere sunny and warm are almost certain for trainee gardai Tony Quinn, Jim Shelly, Brian Flynn and sub David Fitzgibbon. The team members from the Garda Siochana Training College,

Templemore, safeguarded their futures by securing a memorable victory over Mary Immaculate College, Limerick in last week's heat of Challenging Times, the Irish Times/ RTE quiz for third level colleges.

Mary Immaculate tried hard, but the Garda eventually racked up an impressive 230-65 victory, earning a place in the second round for the first time in their history and laying to rest the possibility of, any cracks about Garda Intelligence. Mary I was represented by Michael Hourigan, James Lynch, Patrick O'Leary and sub Daniel O'Sullivan.

This week UL will face the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy, who have yet to make their mark in Challenging Times. Challenging Times is shown each Tuesday at 8.30 p.m. on RTE and is repeated at 11.00 a.m. on Friday, also on RTE 1.
