April: Department of Education launched Schools IT 2000 Millenium Project. Government to spend £30 million over five years on equipment, training, curriculum resources and support. Promised website for advice and curriculum materials, , has not yet appeared.

September: Telecom Eireann pledged to spend £10 million over three years to connect every school to Internet and give every school a free multimedia PC. It will provide some free Internet access and a website for teacher information and support. Some 40 primary and second-level schools are to be selected to pilot advance technologies.

Imminent: Department to announce Policy Framework for IT in Schools, an integrated plan with funding for development of IT in the state's 4,000 schools.
