Janet Stafford asked pupils from Rutland Street NS, Dublin, and St Patrick's NS, Greystones, Co Wicklow
Yes, because we're all different and the same. For our "celebrate other cultures" week we visited a mosque and a synagogue. It was very interesting. I learned they read from right to left. I'm glad we had this week - it was fun. Beni from Kenya did dressing up with us and taught us a Kenyan dance. It's important to learn about other people so you can understand them if you go to their country. I'd like to go to Algeria because I like the headscarves they wear. We had couscous with meat - it was as nice as Irish stew. I told my mam, she might try and do it. It's good to have a variety of people. If you understand other people's beliefs a bit you won't have a bad feeling towards them or influence other people to. We learnt about Judaism and Muslims. The synagogue had a lot of decoration and they let us ask questions. I was born in Nairobi, so I'm very comfortable with other cultures. It's not really important to learn about other cultures - it's just a fun thing to do. We'd to take our runners off in the mosque so the carpet wouldn't get dirty. The Muslims believe Jesus was a prophet and they don't have any pictures of him on the wall - that was strange. I'm happy I'd the chance to see it. I'm Dutch and I've lived here for a year and a half. I speak Dutch at home with my family - I like being able to speak two languages. We learned a song in Swahili during our culture week. I found out that Muslims and Jews do a lot more for their religion, for instance they fast. It's important to learn about other cultures - I don't think it changes the way you feel. I liked the mosque - you could do tumbles on the carpet there, so all of us were messing. They pray with their heads on the ground. I liked learning about food from the Middle East, like couscous and sweets.
